All my life I’ve had thick hair. The only thing that’s changed about it over the years is that it’s gone from doll-like curly to wavy. A lot of people have said they envy how my hair has so much volume and that I’d regret it if it were thin or thinner. I can see their point, but from my perspective, I’m sure I’d find it less frustrating trying to give my hair body compared to having to tame it into submission nearly everyday. It takes me at least an hour just to straighten my hair. Yes, an hour. We always want what we can’t have, right?
As you can imagine, as someone with hair as thick as mine, it easily gets into knots and tangles – especially right after I shower. Sometimes, even after using a palmful of conditioner, I still have to often tug with all my might when combing my hair. It’s a pain. Literally. I know I can easily use a detangling spray, but I often straighten my hair with a flat iron that can be used on wet hair and many detangling sprays are flammable, meaning I can’t expose them to the heat of my flat iron right after. So to spare my hair from any more physical abuse, I decided to get something from the much-raved about Tangle Teezer line, their Tangle Teezer Compact Styler. Yes, I’m hopping onto the late Tangle Teezer bandwagon!
Product description: An innovative hairbrush that is just too busy being fabulous! Cute in size and big on style, it can be popped into your bag and pulled out in a New York minute to reboot hair in seconds. Has a removable cover to protect the patented and innovative teeth from fluff and dirt.
Revolutionary teeth configuration for dual action. Gives pain free detangling - Memory flex technology for speedy and gentle results. Ideal on wet and dry hair - Easy click-off, click on cover to protect teeth. Keeps them clean on-the-go - Ergonomically designed to fit snugly in your palm for creative styling and easy handling.
I really love just how sleek yet still cute this brush is. I had a hard time deciding between the metallic, gold version or the hot pink one, but my bias towards anything pink won in the end. This particular design is called “Pink Sizzle”. It’s unique, curved shape is part of its ergonomic design that’s supposed to make it fit comfortably in your hand and help you grip the brush with ease.
Since this is the ‘compact’ version, meaning it’s for those of you who love to bring a brush wherever you go, it has a cover which protects the bristles while it’s tumbling around in your bag or suitcase. The cover, much like the description said, easily ‘snaps on and off’ and you can hear a soft clicking sound to let you know it’s securely in place. I don’t bring this around with me so I can’t say if the cover remains in place even when it’s been moving around in your bag, but it does seem like it’ll hold.
The bristles themselves are very soft and flexible, but also sturdy at the same time. I guess since this brush is meant to just glide through hair and stop you from doing any tugging then hard, stiff bristles aren’t needed. Actually, since they’re so flexible, I think the bristles are less prone to breaking or snapping.
The brush really does fit very comfortably in my hand and in a way, you can hold onto it more securely than a regular brush handle because you’ve got a more all around grip on it. However, as someone with long hair, the fact that it doesn’t have a typical, long handle is a problem because a long handle gives me that added length I need to reach the ends of my hair when I brush. With this, I either have to extend my arm all the way back, aka strain them, or gather my hair over my shoulders and brush from there.
So, the big question: does this brush really make struggling with knots and tangles a thing of the past? Yes, but not completely. No brush will make your tangles disappear just like that. That’s the job of a really good conditioner or detangling spray. What I find though is that whenever I do have to tug through my hair with this brush, I only have to do so gently and with very little effort. Even if I didn’t use a conditioner during showering! No more wincing in pain or growling as I struggle to pull through a tough knot of hair! The same goes for when my hair is either wet or dry. Is all the hype of the brush justified? Yes and no. While it’s a very good brush and I love how I no longer have to subject myself to pain and strain when brushing, the same can still be achieved with a regular brush and what I just mentioned earlier in this paragraph: a really good conditioner or detangling spray. Then again, if you’re going to shell a little extra for either or both of those, why not use that extra money to get this brush? Also, as I said before, as someone who can’t use a detangling spray because I use a flat iron almost right after I shower, then this is a pretty great product. I wouldn’t say this is a necessity though, even if you’re a thick-haired gal like me, because I have tried a number of conditioners that make brushing my hair almost just as easy as when I’m using this brush. I’m still really happy I got this though. The only thing that’s making me not love it completely is the extra effort needed to reach the ends of my hair, especially since I’m growing it out and it’ll just become even longer. Not the brush’s fault though! I just wish they could come up with a brush like this except with a practical and longer handle. I’d definitely purchase it if they did.
