I hoard a lot of different kinds of makeup. That I will admit. But I do seem to hoard one particular type the most: mascara. This poses a bit of a dilemma since mascara is one of the fastest items to expire in your makeup collection (only up to 3 months), and since my eyes are also quite prone to getting styes, I really need to make sure to throw away ones that are getting too old.
I can’t help it though! I just love mascara too much, and how they really open and perk up my eyes. So another one I had to add to the collection (well, it was given to me so I can’t be blamed this time) is the Pixy Waterproof Mascara (Php260.00).
Product info: Waterproof mascara with smudge-free formula. Gives thickness and lasting curl to each strand of the lashes.
Pixy is one of the newest beauty brands present in the country, having just been launched back in August. If I’m not mistaken, it’s owned by Japanese company Mandom Beauty, but it’s manufactured and very popular in Indonesia. For an imported brand, I must say that overall their products are very affordable too!
The mascara only comes in one shade which is black. I always prefer black mascaras, but recently I’ve started to like and experiment with brown ones. Too bad they don’t have one I could try!
Pixy is known for its girly, cute packaging and this mascara is no exception with its hot pink box and the classic pink and black combo of the tube. The tube is made of light, sturdy plastic and holds 7ml of product.
I love how it’s ‘curvy’ too, an instantly unique feature. Since the tube is quite slim, it won’t take up a lot of space in your makeup kit unlike a lot of chunky mascaras.
The applicator is a curved, bristle brush. Curved applicators are perfect for girls like me with straight lashes because it allows your lashes to sit in that curve and when you run the brush through them, it creates a gentle curl in the middle while at the same time lifting the outer lashes.
Tip: When applying mascara onto lower lashes with curved brushes, flip the brush so that the outward curve is what runs through the lashes.
As a daily mascara user, I’m already happy with a one coat application. That’s usually only what I need anyway. But I find with Pixy’s Waterproof Mascara, I do need to double up to see better results. While it does add some length to my lashes, it’s not that noticeable. The same can be said with volume, but there’s definitely more volume as compared to length. The most visible change is really with my bottom lashes. They instantly look longer and fuller even with just one coat. The formula can easily clump, I find, especially when you start to apply the second coat. But these aren’t crazy, messy clumps like I’ve experienced with some other mascaras. They can easily be fixed or removed with a lash comb.
Now is it waterproof? I can happily say it is. Even after numerous splashes with water the mascara held up. No flaking, running, or smudging. This one of those mascaras you can watch a good, tear-jerker film to. Of course, just don’t be rubbing your eyes while your lashes or eyes are wet because that’s when the smudging and flaking action will come about. Like with many mascaras or eyeliners, water can weaken the formula, so it’ll hold up in contact with it but disappear once you ‘aggravate’ it with rubbing, wiping, etc. I have to say though, it didn’t smudge or flake as much as I thought it would so that was a pleasant surprise. Lastly, while the mascara stays put all day, it doesn’t hold a curl quite the same way. Halfway through the day, the curl’s all but gone. My lashes do stay a little lifted though, just without a curl.
While this product doesn’t give me the va-va-voom, falsie-like lashes that I always look for when it comes to mascaras, it does present itself as a good, everyday mascara because it gives a hint of added volume and length which is really all most people need. Even I have a lot of days where I just want my lashes looking quite natural, but with just enough extra volume and length to open up my eyes. The fact that is indeed waterproof is a bonus for someone like me who often has to deal with watery eyes and the constant tearing that comes with it. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s affordably priced too giving it a bit of competition with other imported (and even local) brands being sold here.
